R.I.P. As the World Turns (aka My Ode to Soap Operas)

So, I'm supposed to be studying for my last final tomorrow (side note: yay!), but I'm proscrastinating. Also, I'm saddened by the news that CBS has cancelled As the World Turns. The last episode will air September 17, 2010 after 54 years. Once upon a time, especially in late middle school through early college, I eagerly waited to see what would happen next in Oakdale.

Though I haven't regularly watched the show in a few years, I hate that the genre is slowly dying. Guiding Light went off the air this fall after a 72-year, 15,762-episode run and the future looks pretty bleak for daytime serial television. My viewing timeline of GL was very similar to that of ATWT, which is fitting since they were considered "sister" shows. And while I was sad to see GL's cancellation, it didn't hit me as hard then as ATWT's has hit me now. Maybe it was because GL was virtually unrecognizable to me by the end of its run having been reduced to out-of-studio location shoots and shaky, single-held cameras as a means to cut costs. I did tune in for the very last episodes of GL. It was like saying good-bye to a long and faithful friend. I was pleased that it ended with the annual Bauer barbecue and the reunions of some of my favorite relationships/couples, especially the four Muskateers, Mallet and Dinah, Bill and Lizzie, and, of course, Josh and Reva.

This makes me wonder what will be in store for As the World Turns' final episodes. I dearly hope it centers around core characters and families and brings together the most cherished couples. I would especially love for the final words to be spoken by Nancy Hughes, played by Helen Wagner. Wagner, the only original cast member remaining, spoke the first words on the soap ("Good morning, dear") in 1956, and it would be fitting if she spoke the last.

I know soap operas get a bad rap, but their very nature makes them so fascinating. They are a unique television medium in that they tend to go on and on creating rich, vibrant histories. This is the reason they are so very different from primetime shows and the reason fans get so into them. People who watch soaps generally grow up watching soaps with their mothers or grandmothers. I grew up watching Days of our Lives with my mother and when I got older, I branched out to other soaps. Because it's on everyday year after year, the characters become familiar and viewers become unusually invested in their lives. While soaps today have fallen mightily from the deliciously campy, adventure-filled, love-in-the-afternoon, heydeys of the '80s and the more realistic, well-written, social awareness of the '90s, I still hate to see the genre die. And though General Hospital and All My Children are especially atrocious these days, I would never want these shows canceled mainly because, misguided or not, I still have hope for them to get better and become the shows I once loved. I think daytime can be revitalized and I draw such hope from the example set by One Live to Live, which, in my opinion, is the best in daytime. It's just soapy goodness. It helps that the show has hired a head writer that seems to sincerely love and, perhaps most importantly, respect the genre. As a result, the show has experienced a rebirth in quality storytelling. OLTL isn't perfect but it's generally well-written, respectful toward its history, and integrates the entire cast and canvas.

While I wasn't entirely surprised by the decision to cancel the show (ATWT has been hanging by a thread for a while now since producer Proctor & Gamble hasn't been exactly subtle about it's desire to get out of the soap business), I was most certainly disappointed. Lately, I have been checking in with ATWT once in a while since the news broke that Paul Leyden's Simon is returning, so I would be up-to-speed when Simon stepped back into Oakdale. Though Simon and Katie were the reason I first tuned into ATWT (they are still one of my top soap couples of all time), I became fond of the other Oakdale residents and was entralled in their lives, loves, joys, and heartbreaks. If you'll indulge me, I'd like to relive some of my favorite moments/couples/storylines.

-Simon and Katie's wedding of convenience. One of the funniest, most entertaining weddings in soap history. I wish I could find a clip of it. Seriously, it's up there with, though doesn't quite surpass, Sean and Tiffany (er, Elsie May Crumholtz)'s wedding from General Hospital.

-More Simon and Katie: Halloween. The airport. Simon admits he loves Katie. Katie teases Simon with her superstitions. First Halloween anniversary. The real wed ding. The cottage. Simon begs Katie to live when she flatlines after donating part of her liver to sister Margo. I really wish I could find the scenes of Simon and Katie in the opera house basement in Malta as they are probably my favorites, but alas.

-Hunt Block's snarky and dastardly Craig Montgomery. I loved Block's Craig with Cady McClain's Rosanna.

-Paul and Rose: I loved Scott Holroyd's Paul (I still prefer his Paul to Roger Howarth's version) with Rose. They just sparkled. First meeting. The gazebo. First date. Engaged.

-Trent Dawson's Henry Coleman and his hilarious, partners-in-crime-turned-best-friendship with Katie.

-Hal Munson's death. How I loved Hal. The sadness surrounding his death was exaccerbated by the fact that it resulted from his portrayer Benjamin Hendrickson's suicide. Jesse Soffer's performance as Will Munson was especially moving. I loved his entire run as Will. He was one of the best actors the show produced. And that's not damning with faint praise. This is a show that launched the careers of Meg Ryan and Julianne Moore in addition to employing one of the best casts in daytime.

-Dusty and Lucy: It started at the warehouse. Hiding. The charm. Dusty comforts Lucy at the Oakdale PD. First kiss. "I could drown in you." Dusty saves Lucy. Breakfast in bed. Courtyard break-up.

-Jack and Carly's Montana wedding and Jack is Sage's father.

-Luke comes out to Holden and Lily.

-Lucinda's cancer.

-Paul and Meg in the cabin. Before they spiraled into a mess of suck. This was also the only time I cared about Roger Howarth's Paul.

-Luke and Noah: First and second kisses. First time.

Also, some iconic memories I've only seen via YouTube.

-The fabulous Lisa Grimaldi.

-Bob and Kim.

-Julianne Moore's dual roles of Frannie and Sabrina Hughes.

-Teenaged Lily and Holden first meet in the Walsh stables. I really wish I could find the scene where Holden drops down from the loft and Lily is left speechless. That's one of the most recognizable moments from the show.

-Steve and Betsy's wedding. (Betsy Stewart was played by future America's sweetheart Meg Ryan.)

-Old school Tom and Margo, played by Justin Deas and Margaret Colin.

-Scott Bryce's vulnerable and tortured Craig Montgomery. His Craig was best with Finn Carter's Sierra and is likely Craig's best pairing period.

-Margo pulling Casey off life support.

-Jack and Carly in Teague's cabin.

I know there are plenty more, but it's hard to get them all when a show has a decades long history. Luckily (and hopefully), these will all live on via the wonder that is YouTube.

Winter Fashion 2009: Ralph Lauren (American Holiday)

It's winter time for Ralph Lauren. He's got two different winter collections this season and this one is "American Holiday," which takes on a "Ski Chic" theme. First, as always, some promotions.

I love this ad. I like the sleekness of the skirt contrasted with the texture of the sweater. That sweater is gorgeous, but I didn't see it anywhere on the Ralph Lauren website. Boo.

Fall Fashion 2009: Ralph Lauren (Part 2)

Well, gang, this will be the last fall fashion post of 2009. This is the rest of Ralph Lauren's offerings for fall, which the company titled, "Fall Manor." The collection's got a great sporty, English countryside aesthetic, which Ralph Lauren is obviously going for in it's promotions.

It seems like plaid's really on fire this fall and, from the looks of it, will continue to be so this winter. The red one with the suede patch is one of my favorite pieces for fall. I'm loving the silhouette. It's sleek and tailored. And the patch really gives it a little something extra. I'm not too crazy about that crest on the tartan, but I really like it otherwise.

Fall Fashion 2009: L.L.Bean

If L.L.Bean knows anything, it's sweaters and outerwear. And fall is the time for sweaters and outerwear! Let's see what L.L.Bean has to offer this season.

So, last Christmas I mentioned that I got my mother a Brooks Brothers pajama set. Except they were a summer set (They were cute! And on sale!). This time, I've got the right season. I bought her this lovely PJ set from L.L.Bean and had it monogrammed. It's already arrived and it's so soft and cuddly! That blue is a great color, too.

I also mentioned last Christmas that I'm of Scandinavian ancestry (Norwegian), so I love most things Nordic-inspired (though Fair Isle is in Scotland, the fair isle knitting technique produces a similar aesthetic as traditional Norwegian knitwear). And I especially love knitwear featuring the selburose, which is likely the most recognizable pattern.

Also, all this knitwear also reminded me of my favorite Norwegian retailer Dale of Norway, which is the best source for authentic Norwegian knitwear. I have been planning an Olympic fashion post (as in Beijing in 2008, Ralph Lauren is the official designer for the 2010 US team) and since Dale of Norway is the official outfitter of the Norwegian Olympic team, expect an Olympics post closer to the opening ceremonies in February. I love the Olympics so I'm very excited about it!

So, I was going about my business yesterday (dealing with school, running errands ... the usual) when I went to get the mail and what did I find but the holiday Vineyard Vines catalogue. That's when it hit me. I really need to get that VV post up. It was like a sign from above! Or the VV marketing machine. Anyway, here it is (let's forget it's long after the week and a half I said it'd be, mmkay?).

Speaking of marketing, I'm taking a marketing class right now, so let's pretend that's the reason I love to look at ads and promotional materials.

Yesterday, we took a peak at Brooks Brothers' foray into the past with their Mad Men collection. Today, we return to the present. Check it out. But, fair warning, this is Brooks Brothers and I'm not responsible for any argyle overloads.

Luckily for you, however, I'm in a great mood, I'll get the argyle over with first and spare you what will surely turn into my only commentary being "ARGYLE!11!!!1!" and "Love! Squee!" I know, I know. I'm so thoughtful. You're welcome.

Love Mad Men? Dream of being Don Draper? Well, now you can! Sort of. At least, you can dress like him! And it's all thanks to the genius minds over at Brooks Brothers.

Below is the actual suit. It's part of Brooks' Fitzgerald line in the 1818 Collection, which is "distinguished by narrower lapels, higher armholes, a two-button jacket and trimmer fitting, plain-front trousers."

In celebration of this fashion nostalgia, we should celebrate the man himself. We should also celebrate his wife. Because, like Blair Waldorf, Betty Draper is my hero. Apparently, I aspire to nothing more than an endearingly manipulative, bitchy upper class WASP and a slightly disturbed, 1960s suburban housewife.

Yeah, I'm OK with that.

Ralph Lauren has a bunch of great fall looks, so I divided this into two parts. This isn't really all that fall though. It's more of a mix of late-summer, early-fall. But whatever. Let's not get hung up on details.

I think I'd also prefer if there was no embroidery on the back of the collar. I like the idea of contrasting-colored collars, but I'm not feeling the embroidery. I guess it's really not a big deal for me since I a lifetime member of the "Collar Down Crew."

Procrastination has struck. So, in honor of Gossip Girl's gallant return to television last night, I thought I could celebrate with some of my favorite Gossip Girl fashions. (Click on the pictures to enlarge.)

Blair Waldorf is, quite possibly, the best character on television. She's bitchy, manipulative, scheming, and fashionable. Also, she has the greatest headband collection known to (wo)man. Basically, she's my hero. Here she is at her preppiest. After all, what's more preppy than a prep school uniform?!

This is probably my favorite Blair dress/look. I have coveted this dress from the moment I saw it. I love the rich color and smooth fabric.

Do You Believe in Redemption?

Sorry about the lack of posts lately. School has started again and I just had LASIK surgery, so I have been busy and then incapacitated (sort of). I will get back to the reguarly scheduled fashion posts as soon as possible (read: whenever I stop being lazy and get around to it).

Since my doctor forbade me from doing anything exciting for the weekend, I've been doing nearly nothing except listening/watching the coverage on Teddy Kennedy. Being of a younger generation, I wasn't exactly privy to the intimate details of lives of the Kennedys the way my mother and grandmother apparently are. But thanks to this weekend, I now know more than I ever needed/wanted to about the Kennedy family. I mean, I knew the family was known for its tragedies (JFK, RFK, Chappaquiddick, JFK Jr.), but I didn't know about Teddy's oldest brother who died in WWII, sister who suffered from a mental disability, his plane crash, role in the lives of Jack and Bobby's children, child stricken with bone cancer, divorce from a woman who battled with alcoholism, and failed presidential bid among other personal and family tragedies. I have a new appreciation for the theory of the "Kennedy curse." I can't imagine the enormous pressure he must have been under to not only live up to the expectations of his family, but, despite being the youngest child of Joe and Rose Kennedy, to act as it's de facto patriarch. It gave me a new perspective on the man. While he certainly wasn't perfect, he was most certainly human. Even though there are those who believe his mistakes rendered him beyond redemption, I think it is a testament to his character that he never stopped trying to find it. He made mistakes, and as tragic and devastating as their consequences were, he seemed to take upon himself the burden of atoning for them when lesser men would just make excuses. And while I certainly don't condone his actions at Chappaquiddick, I do admire his personal and public struggle for redemption.

For me, the most touching moment of the remembrance of Ted Kennedy was the eulogy given by his son Edward M. Kennedy, Jr. Sometimes I wonder if I have a heart of stone, but even I was choked up by this incredibly moving speech. The image of a 12-year-old Teddy Jr., whose leg was amputated due to bone cancer, being aided up a snow-covered hill by his encouraging father is both heartwrenching and heartwarming.

So, we say good-bye to Teddy Kennedy, a dutiful public servant who bore the burden of the Kennedy expectations and tragedies just by virtue of living. Now, he can finally rest in peace.

Now that I've gotten the sentimental stuff out of the way (leave it to me to kill the mood, but I hate to end with such sadness), let's dive head first into the shallow end of the pool. (I know, I know, this entire blog is basically an adventure in being shallow. So sue me!) Who knew young Teddy Kennedy was so attractive?! JFK gets all this attention for being so handsome, but, in my humble opinion, Teddy was the best-looking Kennedy brother. Fall 2009 Fashion: Ralph Lauren Runway Collection

I've been sitting on these Ralph Lauren Fall 2009 runway pictures since they came out in the spring, so I suppose I should post them first. Besides, what better way to kick off the fall season than by jumping in the high fashion end?

I'm really feeling this collection. If you remember back to the Spring 2009 collection, the theme was African safari. This season blends British, Bohemian, and Eastern influences to conjure an image of estate living. Titled "Romantic Luxury," it's incredibly elegant and sophisticated. Plus, it's just so fall! Tweeds, silks, suede, and velvet give the collection a quintessential autumn air. The collection is divided into four "acts." Again, like with the spring collection, I only picked out few looks that really popped to me for brevity's sake. But if you like what you see, I recommend checking out the whole collection. There are many other gorgeous pieces. There's also really cool behind-the-scenes stuff and more information on the inspiration of the collection. Here we go! Yes, I'm Still Alive

Sorry, about the lack of posts this summer, but real life sometimes gets in the way. It's been a rather busy summer! The cruise (way back in May!) was wonderful. To relax and be carefree in the warm Caribbean sun was more than I could ask for after four years of hard work! The cruise started in Puerto Rico, which was just lovely. We spent the night in Old San Juan because we wanted to make sure we didn't miss the boat. It worked out well because our hotel was right in the middle of Old San Juan and we got to shop (Ralph Lauren and Coach outlets, yay!) and look around. We visited the Castillo de San Cristóbal, which was amazing. The first destination on our cruise was St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, followed by Antigua, and Bermuda. We ended in NYC where we stayed for three more days. We managed to fit in three Broadway shows (God bless student rates) and some shopping (of course!). As for the shows, we saw The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, and Rock of Ages. (I'm not going to lie, I thought Mary Poppins was kind of weird. But that's probably because I've never seen the Julie Andrews movie. Apparently, I grew up under a rock.) Best of all, Filene's Basement had a wonderful sale (including their Vineyard Vines merchadise). Let's just say my wallet took a hit. Totally worth it.

Then came my cousin's graduation in South Carolina, followed by the family beach trip to my favorite vacation destination: Hilton Head Island. We went to Hilton Head every summer growing up and after a couple alternate destinations (Cape Cod, Europe) the last couple of years, we returned this year with great fanfare (obviously!). We always vacation with my uncle and his family, so it's always a blast with the eight of us (my mom, brother, grandmother, aunt, uncle, and two cousins). We went to the beach and the pool. The boys played some golf while we girls took a day cruise to Savannah, Georgia. It was such a great trip and brought back so many memories, my grandmother bought a place so we can return every summer.

The traveling stopped for a while as I started my first class in graduate school! So that kept me busy for five weeks. But after that my mom, grandmother, and I took a trip out to Minnesota to visit family (my grandparents are originally from Minnesota, so most of our family still lives there) and attend my grandmother's 65th high school reunion! I know, time flies and all.

So now I'm home again, getting ready for the new semester to start. In the meantime, I'm having laser eye surgery in a couple of weeks, so that should be great. And tomorrow we're going to the Carolina Panthers' training camp practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with our neighbors.

Now that we're all caught up, I hope to get back to the fashion posts. I've got some topics and pictures, I just need to get around to it.

Fresh From Key Largo!

I have made my triumphant return to my homeland (North Carolina) and I come back a certified scuba diver! Yay! The trip was great. So worth it. And flying over driving? Best decision ever (I know, I know, I've said that before. But I mean it!). Now I'm ready to leave for my cruise! We fly to San Juan tomorrow morning and the boat leaves Sunday. I can't wait, I'm so excited! The only problem is packing. I'm already busting the seams on my suitcase. I still need room for the things I plan to acquire on the trip! Grr! Damn airlines and their stupid paying for checked luggage ridiculousness. Oh, well. I'll keep working on it, I guess.

In other news, I graduated from college. Yes, it finally happened and, no, I'm still not sure about it. The graduation was great. Our commencement speaker, Archbishop Desmond Tutu was simultaneously insane and awesome. There were lots of mentions of the basketball championship (speaking of, this is completely unrelated, but totally worth checking out). I'm going to miss it. I just can't fathom my life without school. And lately it's really been starting to hit me that I will not be going to Chapel Hill in the fall. I guess I will technically still be a student since I'm enrolled in a graduate program, but still. It's not the same. We'll see how things go.

I Think I'm Finally Ready To Talk About It

So, it's been over a week since that awful Wednesday evening when Anoop was kicked off ~~America Sucks~~ American Idol. It took a week of bitterness but I think I'm finally OK with it. Still not overly happy because when I think about that damn judge's save, I still get a little rage-y. But I've accepted it and I'm ready to move on. I know, that's what really matters. Anyway, Anoop seems to be taking it extremely well. His interviews have all been gracious and charming. I especially loved this one. It helped kickstart my healing process. So good for him! I hope he does well. Alright, I think that's enough of my melodramatics for now.

I did go to the Clef concert last Saturday. It was really good. Probably the best one I've been to, and I've been to every single one since I was a sophomore. They released their new CD, Twist. It's pretty great. I highly recommend it. You can check out a bunch of their performances on YouTube.

Also, Monday was the last day of classes and I attended the last class of my undergraduate career! So sad. I have one more exam for the semester and then...GRADUATION! I still have mixed feelings. The whole thing has been very bittersweet. I didn't realize when I came to Chapel Hill just how much I would love the town and the university. Well, it's been a great four years.

Now it's time for my cruise!

Spring Fashion 2009: Vineyard Vines

I've saved Vineyard Vines for last because they had, by far, my favorite collection this spring. I think it may have something to do with the fact that, even out of all the great brands featured here, they most clearly understand "classic, casual prep," and that's what I like. I loved nearly everything they offered. Thus, the reason for this incredibly lost post (and the reason I've put off doing it!). Final Four Update

Well, I've had plenty of time to recover from my road trip to Detroit for the Final Four. I'm so glad my roommate and I went. It was well worth it. We'll never have an opportunity like that again. And to think we were going to come home after the semi-finals. I know! But the day we were going to leave, we decided we just couldn't. Best decision ever! I know I missed the Franklin Street mob, but being in Ford Field with the team in that moment was priceless. I can rush Franklin Street for any old Duke victory! Anyway, here are a couple of snapshots from the weekend. We even went wine tasting in Canada!

Detroit, Here I Come!

Best day ever! That's right, I will be in Detroit for the Final Four! Not only will I be in Detroit but I will in the Ford Field arena watching my beloved Tar Heels take on Villanova this Saturday! I know! And it's my birthday! My life will be complete at 22!

My roommate and I decided to sign up for the lottery for student tickets just in case, thinking we probably wouldn't get tickets. But we did! We didn't even think much about little things like how we would get there, where we would stay, etc. But it's looking like a road trip and we've booked a hotel.

I can hardly wait!

OK, so I have this thing about large emblems on shirts. In that, I hate them. Really hate them. I know I've mentioned this before in regard to Ralph Lauren's big pony fix. However, I make two exceptions because I have specific rules for when large emblems are acceptable. Exception #1: Blazers.

And I prefer the emblems to be of crests, seals, or shields. It's reminiscent of a prep school uniform, don't you think? And very equestrian.

So, what's Exception #2? Rugbys and other sport related articles of clothing.

I know I said I'd post more fashion reviews over Spring Break. I had my wisdom teeth taken out Thursday and I meant to get a few in before that, but I just didn't get around to it. Bear with me and I'll get them up as soon as I can. Meaning some time next week, I hope.

In other news, the UNC/Duke game was AWESOME! Best basketball game of my undergraduate career. The senior basketball players gave speeches after the game and all was wonderful. Now, it's time for March Madness!

Spring Fashion 2009: J.Crew

I have to admit, I didn't find too much in new arrivals over at the J.Crew website that really grabbed my attention. But did find a few things. Mostly because I love how J.Crew puts looks together.

Love the nautical/beachy look with a great loose fitting, navy striped tunic paired with classic khakis.

I noticed J.Crew had a lot of beachy tunics this spring and I love this one paired with simple shorts.

I adore this oxford, especially that green, seafoamy color. J.Crew calls it "fresh mint."

Love the pink/white contrast here. This short sleeved cardigan is bright and perfect for spring.

This is my favorite look from J.Crew this spring. I'm a big fan of pairing yellow and blue together. In fact, I recently bought a pair of yellow chino shorts very similar (more like nearly identical) to these. The cardigan adds a neutral color and creates a great layered look.

From the girls section of Crewcuts, I love the adorable pockets on what would otherwise be just another pair of khaki shorts. They also come in white and pink.

I'm not big on jean shorts, but I'm so in love with these! I only wish J.Crew made them for women!

As for the boys, I really liked these beach shorts.

Not too bad, J.Crew. Not your best collection, but not bad.

Spring Fashion 2009: Ralph Lauren Runway Collection

I know I'm a little late with this, but I decided that since I plan on covering the spring fashions of my favorite lines, I should include Ralph Lauren's runway collection, which showed last fall in New York. The fall collection just showed at fashion week in New York, which I'll post after I finish the spring lines.

So, I've gathered all my favorite items from my favorite stores, so I'll post them whenever I get a chance over the next few days or so. These are just my favorite looks from the spring collection, you can find pictures of the whole collection here. The collection is just gorgeous. Ralph sticks to what made him famous - glamour, luxury, class - and the end result is exquisite. If you want to see the pictures in more detail, you can click on them to see their original (usually larger) size (same goes for all my posts). Well, let's take a look!

The theme of the show was exotic travels in Africa and this safari-inspired outfit was the opening look of the show. I love how the ruggedness of the blouse, hat and bag grounds the brightness of the pants. The show is essentially divided in three sub-themes and, in addition to opening the show, this look opens the safari theme that is dominated by neutral tones and cargo embellishments.

I seriously love that bag. I have this thing for large handbags and this one is gorgeous! Love the shorts and jacket.

Simple, chic gold dress.

One of the reasons I love fashion week (and high fashion in general) is the artistic license designers use in their effort to tell a story through clothes. It's fabulously over-the-top, which is the idea. I mean, I don't know many (or any, for that matter) people that would wear a turban, but that's not the point. It's artistic, it's telling a story, and it looks amazing in the context of the runway. Also, that canteen? Awesome! Nice touch.

This section moves from rugged to glamourous and features crips whites and creamy ivories. Keeping the brown embellishments make the white stand out. It looks so sharp.

These pants are a recurring theme that add fluidity to the show and keeps the show from being choppy by jumping between vastly different looks. They tie the whole line together.

That white trench is gorgeous. And where can I get that luggage?! Just beautiful.

I really liked this flowing dress, especially the ruching detail on the bodice.

Great detailing on the blouse.

I really love this blouse (dress?). And the African-inspired necklace really compliments the look.

By now you've probably realized that this section was my favorite considering how many pictures I posted. I just found it to be the embodiment of glamour and sophistication.

The last section moves into a decidedly Moroccan/North African/Saharan theme. Love the juxtaposition of black and gold in these looks. Again, that necklace is beautiful.

Great contrast between a basic little black dress and an exotic, intricate turban.

Great tailored suit and that little bit of gold popping out at the neck really makes the look.

The gold embellishment makes this otherwise average dress.

This was the final look and boy is it a showstopper. Great cut and color. The model (the flawless Ubah Hassan) looks gorgeous, her skin glows next to the gold fabric. Again, the detail in the turban is wonderful. Ubah Hassan and Valentina Zelyaeva (the model in the opening look) are also the faces of Ralph Lauren and their opening and closing looks are (were, I suppose, since this collection came out months ago) featured in the spring campaign. I haven't had a lot of time lately but I love this article so I had to post it. Every year, the DTH runs this 1990 article by former columnist Ian Williams on every Tar Heel's favorite topic (basketball) and the million dollar question (Why do we hate Duke so much?). I find it rather insightful and it always makes me smile.

I recall a strange and hazy time about four and a half years ago, fretting in the sweltering heat of Hinton James 244, sitting on my bed while the rest of the residents scurried outside.

My suitemate from Brevard was parading his spittle collection, a particularly nauseating mass of his oral waste that he kept in three 2-liter bottles above the door. My roommate spoke in a dialect from Edenton that barely passed for anything on our side of the language tree, and the only things I had to wear in the 105-degree weather were corduroy pants from my goofball private high school. Tripping over the bricks, showing up for classes in rooms miles away from where the classes were taught and getting lost by the water tower, I might as well have had a huge placard wrapped around my neck that said "Oh so clueless" and a number to call in case anybody found me peeing in his yard.

But there was a time before that. I call it The Time When I Thought I Wanted to Go to Duke.

For some unexplainable reasons having to do with planetary alignment or a chemical imbalance, I was set on going to that university in Durham. My high school in Virginia brainwashed us all into thinking that if we didn't end up going to either Duke, UVa. or one of the Ivys we would surely end up stocking Pampers at Wal-Mart. So off I scuttled to those schools, all bushy-tailed and bated, hopin' to impress some institutes of higher learning. By the time I got to visiting Duke, however, the luster of college had begun to dull into a bleak haze.

My tour guide's name was Lorna - no lie - and she spoke in a loud, brash voice that seemed to shake the leaves from the cute little shrubberies. "And on your left is Duke Chapel, the centerpiece of our Gothic campus. Our university is considered by many to be the most beautiful campus in America."

"Umm, excuse me," I said, "Where do all the kids live?"

"The kids," she said, in a voice of utter disdain reserved only for parents whose child had been very, very naughty. "The Duke student body mostly lives in the buildings you are looking at right here, with the beautiful Gothic architecture."

"Well, how hard are the classes here? Would I be studying all the time?"

She fixed her cruel New Jersey gaze on my frightened 17-year-old soul. "Look, that's totally assuming you even get in here at all. I know tons of people that would have given their left arm to get in here. And not only that, but - Oh, hi, Thad!" Some senior named Thad wearing Vuarnets and baggy khaki shorts ambled up with an evil Gleem smile.

"Leadin' the kids around, eh Lorna?" he asked, and cackled like the frat Grinch.

"Yeah," she giggled, and the two whispered to each other while exchanging muffled laughs.

I was herded into the cafeteria and stuck in a line for pizza, while Lorna went off into the crowd with some of her friends. A scowling guy slapped a piece of rubber pepperoni pizza on my plate, and as I walked across the room to sit down, I tripped on one of those Gothic little cherub things on the floor and sent my pizza flying 20 feet onto the sweater of a girl named Annabeth, a junior English major from Bridgeport, Conn.

"Oh my God!" she squealed, and every face in the entire joint looked right at me. Thad the sunglasses man started to clap, and half of the cafeteria joined in my humiliation.

Suddenly, I was back in third grade, and all the boys and girls were pointing and laughing at the picture I'd drawn of my family. Suddenly, I was sitting alone at the side of the blacktop while everyone else got picked for the dodgeball team. Suddenly, I was lying in the Iowa snow, getting my ribs kicked by five guys who thought I'd stolen their football. I had no escape.

And that's when I decided to go to Carolina. I had never seen the place, had never heard of Chapel Hill and I picked Hinton James because it had a laundry room. After a while I grew used to the town - I didn't get lost behind the water tower; I learned what Gardner Hall was; and I began to enjoy the company of my suitemate, despite his spittle collection. I also developed a taste for basketball, and during the games I noticed that we had certain heated rivalries - whenever we played one of those teams, I got tense and dug holes in the seat.

Now I realize that school spirit is a pretty goofy thing to some people, but I'll tell you something: I hate Duke with an infernal passion undying. I hate every leaf of every tree on that sickening campus. I hate every fake cherub Gothic piece of crap that litters the buildings like hemorrhoidal testaments to imagined superiority. When I see those Dookie boneheads shoe-polishing their faces navy blue on television, squandering their parents' money with their fratty elitist bad sportsmanship antics and Saab stories, I want to puke all over Durham.

So this is my request, boys of basketball: Tonight, I not only want you to win, I want Krzyzewski calling home to his mother with tears in his eyes. I want Alaa Abdelnaby to throw up brick after brick. I want Rick Fox to take Christian Laettner to the hoop so many times that poor Christian will be dazed on the bench with an Etch-a-Sketch and a box of Crayola crayons. I want Bobby Hurley to trip on his shoelaces and fly into a fat alumnus from Wilmington. Send Thad and Lorna home with their blue tails between their legs.

God bless them Tar Heel boys!

In other Chapel Hill-related news, it's snowing! Yes, again! That's two significant snows this winter. Amazing! Let's hope the university administration can make a reasonable decision about how to handle such foreign weather this time.

Perhaps most importantly, many of my favorite stores are having big winter sales! J. Crew (still soaring after their success with the Obama girls), Ralph Lauren, L.L. Bean, and Brooks Brothers (70% off select women's shoes!).

Of course, winter sales mean these stores are coming out with their spring lines! Hopefully, I'll get around to covering those when I have more time. Until then!

More on the Snoguration!

Ahem.

This week the South shut down (as usual) once the big, bad snow arrived! Well, parts of North Carolina and Virginia did anyway. (Aside: Can we even consider Virginia and North Carolina Southern states anymore since they went Democratic in the election? Have the other Southern states voted us out yet?) It never ceases to amaze me how Southerners freak when even the tiniest flurry is predicted. (They clearly did not spent their childhood Christmas vacations in Cleveland much less stepped foot in Minnesota! Let me know when the snow is knee or even waist deep!) Chapel Hill was no exception. In all fairness, this was a lot of snow (for the South). We got about 4-5 inches. That's more than I've seen around here in years. So, this time, closings were necessary given buying two dozen snow plows is not a practical application of local capital in North Carolina.

So when the snow started coming down Monday night, my roommate and I were sure, given the weather forecast, the university would close on Tuesday. Can't have students walking or commuting to campus in a Southern blizzard! So when we awoke Tuesday morning to check the administration's decision, we discovered that the University hates us and we would not be sleeping in. I know! So we (begrudgingly) ~~slid~~ walked to campus. It was ridiculous. Only once we were in our 8:00am class did the University send people to shovel snow and spread salt. You know, after we already risked our lives getting to class. Then, to top it off, the University decided to cancel classes starting at 3:30pm. 3:30! That's in the afternoon! What's wrong with this school?! I was pissed. Apparently, I wasn't the only disgruntled one.

Anyway, here are some snapshots I took of the Snoguration (including a massive snowball fight and the hundreds of people who watched the big event in the Great Hall), the only good thing to come out of the University's indecisiveness.

Like every other soul on the planet, I watched Barack Obama officially become the President of the United States this afternoon. In Chapel Hill, the event was marked by lovely snowfall. I watched with hundreds of my fellow students in the Student Union on campus. It was electric, historic, and I was proud to be a part of it.

Back to School!

Well, another semester has started. My last as an undergrad. Crap. It doesn't get any better the more I say it. Sigh. Time for more pleasant things.

So, I was watching the American Idol auditions Wednesday night and who pops up but a former Clef Hanger! OK, so that's not how it happened, but I'd like to appear less Clef-stalker-ish (they're so dreamy!). I haven't actually followed American Idol in years, so my odds of just happening upon this gem live were unlikely. But, luckily, I got an email from someone who clearly loves me that former Clef Anoop Desai might be appearing on the audition show becuase he saw a brief clip in a promo. See how little it takes to peak my Clef-interest? Just the possibility of a Clef sends me running back to a show I abandoned forever ago. Long story short: Anoop was ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome! As I pretty much expected him to be. He sang beautifully and with personality. I had a minor issue with Simon calling his outfit "geeky." Ahem. Simon? In America, we call that look "preppy." Has he ever set foot on a college campus? Though, in all fairness, it was a bit borderline. Take that shirt, make it short-sleeved, add a pocket protector, tuck it in, and Simon's spot on. But, as it was, Anoop's look was casual and preppy. And we like that around here! No makeovers needed, thank you. Anyway, thanks to Anoop, I will be stuck watching American Idol this season. Damn those Clefs, their talent, and their gorgeousness. See what they do to me?!

Since this is turning out to be a school-themed post, um, can we quickly (I don't want to linger on the subject, it's so painful) talk about the men's basketball team? And a case of me speaking too soon. Yeah. What the hell?! Talk about a fall from grace. (I just realized that those last few sentences could also apply to my Carolina Panthers. Again, what the hell?! Disappointment is a nasty bitch!) Anyway, let's hope the Tar Heels get their ish together in time for the Big Dance.

P.S. I'm sitting here watching Jurassic Park III on TNT (my somewhat strange love of Jurassic Park is probably best saved for another post) and I just needed to put out into the world how much I love Sam Neill and William H. Macy. Because, well, they're awesome!

Confirmed: The Carolina Panthers Do Hate Me

2009 has been rough on me! First of all, it came entirely too fast. Tomorrow is already the first day of classes! What the hell?! But last night my Carolina Panthers sucked. Big time. Good thing I didn't bother going. How depressing would that have been? My brother did end up going and I felt a little bad for him, having to sit through such a wretched game in the rain. Oh well. Next year, right?

Not to be in a perpetual state of self-pity, a trait which I don't find attractive or amusing, but even Mother Nature hates me. It was unusually warm in the mountains last week for my ski trip. It was nice for the first few days. It wasn't very cold, but comfortable. The snow was a bit slushy, but not bad. Wednesday, however, that wench Mother Nature really had it out for me. Warm and the snow was melting! Nothing but ice and mud. Not exactly the best skiing conditions. Everything did turn around on Thursday. It had snowed all night and the snow machines were running. So, basically, only one day was bad, but I felt like bitching after that Panthers game.

And classes start tomorrow. My last undergrad semester. Uff da.

Happy New Year! It's finally 2009, the year I graduate and have to figure out what to do with my life. So, obviously, here I am putting that off!

Tomorrow I leave for my ski trip. Yay for easy P.E. credits! Amazing how five days of skiing can accomplish what would otherwise take an entire semester. Gotta love it. And this semester (my last as an undergrad!), my roommate and I are taking scuba in preperation for our graduation cruise. So, hopefully, this semester will rock. Let's hope the professors keep the actual work to a minimum. Who wants to do real school work second semester senior year?! Nobody, that's who.

Anyway, I really don't have much to say, but I was thinking about how I haven't posted in a couple days so I thought I should say something. Maybe something will strike me soon.

The Carolina Panthers Love Me Again!

OK, so they never hated me. But still, they proved it on Sunday. Of course, I thought I would have a heart attack in the process as they kicked a last second field goal (by my beloved John Kasay! Seriously, I've loved that man since I was 8 years old) to defeat the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome. I still don't know why John Fox left 6 seconds on the clock for the kick, giving the Saints another shot to score, but whatever. We won and I'm not going to complain! They secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC and earn a first round bye and a second round home game.

My brother has been plotting how he is going to get tickets when they go on sale Thursday. We have a secret Ticket Master location where we got our tickets to the Monday night game this season. We were the only ones there! At our old haunt, there were tons of people clamoring for tickets. I would really like to go to the game, but I'm planning on going to my uncle's in South Carolina for his 50th birthday with my mother and grandmother. I could probably make it to both, since his birthday is on Friday, January 9 and the game is Saturday night, but I wanted to spend the weekend with my family. Besides, I have to be back in Chapel Hill by Sunday since classes start that Monday.

Then again, playoff games are AWESOME! The atmosphere is the best. We went when the Panthers played Dallas at home in 2003 and it was one of the best Panther games I have ever attended.

We'll see. I still have a couple days to think about it. Ugh. Why can't I be in two places at once!

Anyway, speaking of Chapel Hill and football, my Tar Heels broke my heart losing to West Virginia in the Meineke Bowl in Charlotte on December 27. The game was amazing, and so close! In better news for the Tar Heel Nation, the men's basketball team is kicking ass and taking names. They defeated Rutgers by 22 the other day, but they've also got a couple of tough tests coming up. Tomorrow, they play No. 3 Pitt and then head up to No. 2 UConn. I think those games will determine how good the Tar Heels actually are. So far, they've looked great. Even Rutgers coach Fred Hill praised them saying, "They have no weaknesses."

So, things are looking good in my sports world. The Panthers are headed to the playoffs, the UNC football team played admirably in their first bowl game since 2004, and the men's basketball team are ranked No. 1 and undefeated. I only hope things stay this good!

Well, it's the day after Christmas and I'm here at my grandmother's house perusing my favorite stores online for awesome deals. Who doesn't love after-Christmas sales?! Nobody, that's who! So let's dig in!

Brooks Brothers

Brooks Brothers is having their amazing semi-annual sale until January 5! Plus, on top of their already marked down prices, Brooks has been offering an additional 15% off today and yesterday. I know! Buy, buy, buy! Some things that caught my eye:

Now, shoes! Brooks has so many quality, classic, and stylish shoes. They make a woman feel like she's died and gone to heaven.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren sometimes gets a little too trendy for my taste (don't get me started on that big pony...thing...they've been into lately), but they still know how to rock the classics and I'm often able to find things I love. However, their Christmas/winter sale is nowhere near as good as Brooks Brothers'. Regardless, I found some things I liked.

Serana Calfskin Riding Boots (Sale: $1010.00, Reg.: $1100):

Brooks has a similar version that is cheaper (Sale: $748.00, Reg.: $998.00) and, honestly, probably better made, but for some reason I prefer Ralph Lauren's pair. I think it's the buckle at the ankle. It gives it a distictive riding boot feel, while Brooks' could just be regular old boots.

I also found this turtleneck sweater (Sale: $34.99, Reg.: $59.50) which I actually bought. I even got an additional 30% off the sale price!

I got it in this gorgeous icy blue which will go perfectly under the white cableknit sweater I already have. The little polo player on my sweater is the same color as this turtleneck. So, yay! A little post-Christmas present to myself!

J.Crew

J.Crew often has amazing online sales. Unfortunately, their site has been bogged down by glitches since the summer. Even today I experienced problems with their site. But they have great deals and are offering 20% off their final sale items. Some highlights:

My brother gave me this sweater (Sale: $82.00, Reg.: $138.00) for Christmas (and when I say "my brother gave me," I mean my mother picked it out, paid for it, wrapped it and my brother stuck his name and a bow on it!). It was on sale in the store. That's how I'm justifying it's presence in this post!

L.L. Bean

I may be the only one (other than my mother), but I totally love this tartan flannel nightgown (Sale: $24.99, Reg.: $39.99) from L.L. Bean.

I grew up with my mother wearing flannel nightgowns in the winter, so I have a strange affinity for them and this one is just adorable!

Why Do We Play the Game?

Just the other day, I was ~~bitching~~ ~~whining~~ ~~complaining~~ opining that one of the big three networks hates me. Well that hate seems to have spread to my beloved Carolina Panthers. They just dropped their chance to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs by losing a game to the New York Giants they should never have lost.

OK, so it wasn't that bad. And the Panthers don't hate me (but ABC still certainly does). But it was dissapointing. The game was theirs to lose and they just blew it. Big time. When are coaches (Foxy, I'm looking at you!) going to learn that you can't play not to lose. Why do we play the game? Let me tell you why. WE PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! (End Dan Hawkins.) We don't play not to lose. Now, I love John Fox. He has done wonders for this organization since he took over. However, he often plays too conservatively. There are times when you just need to go all out. And if playing for the top seed in the NFC isn't one of those times, I don't know what is. This time, Fox and Company's conservativism, I would argue, lost them the game.

But, like I said, despite my overly dramatic post-title and introduction, I don't think this is that bad. OK, OK, immediately after the game, I thought it was terrible. End-of-my-NFL-football-world terrible. But that was just in the heat of the moment. Now I have time to mull it over (i.e. read the opinions of cooler heads online) and I've decided the outcome of the game is not that bad for the following reasons.

First, it was a great game. Sure, my team lost and that always sucks but the Giants didn't blow the Panthers out. In fact, the Panthers lead most of the game. They proved the could hang with the best the NFC had to offer. The Panthers were thisclose to winning. Just a yard closer and the infamous Meadlowlands wind wouldn't have blown John Kasay's field goal attempt left. Steve Smith's holding penalty brought back a tremendous DeAngelo Williams run. The game was close and it could easily have ended with a Panthers victory.

Second, I think the Panthers needed to lose. I realize losing is generally considered a bad thing, but the Panthers have been on a winning streak for a while. They needed a wake-up call and I'm sure this one was loud and clear.

Third, the Panthers have a tendency to defeat teams in the playoffs that they lose to in the regular season (See Cowboys, Rams, and Eagles in 2003).

Fourth, we still have Steve Smith who, last time I checked (barring that one holding issue), is still the best receiver in the NFL. As long as we have him, things will always be pretty good. Plus, the Panthers have a lot of talent and good leadership.

I still have high hopes for my team in the playoffs. Of course, I would love for them to be in the Super Bowl, but I won't go so far as to predict it at this moment. Not that I'm terribly superstitious or think they don't have a chance. I'm just taking a wait-and-see approach. However, I'm fairly confident that they will make an appearance in the NFC Championship Game. Heck, maybe we'll end up with home field advantage by default because I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants bite it in the second round.

Of course, the Panthers still have to play the Saints this Sunday and win if they want a first round bye. So let's hope things get back on track in New Orleans.

ABC Hates Me

How is it that shows like Rules of Engagement, According to Jim, and Grey's Anatomy (you read that right, Grey's hasn't been interesting in two years and it's officially jumped the shark!) continue to pollute the airwaves, yet quality television programming gets the ax?! Why am I in such despair? You see ABC, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to cancel two of my shows. I know! The nerve! So, it is with deep sadness that I bid them farewell.

RIP Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money. I will cherish your few remaining episodes.

Pushing Daisies: You were a whimsical wonderland. Every episode made me smile from the sheer cuteness that radiated from my television screen. OK, also because of the hotness of Lee Pace as Ned the Piemaker. I will miss your quirky ways and your awesomely obscure references. I will never again wonder if Ned and Chuck will accidently bump into each other while rounding a corner. No longer will Emerson's greed, cynicism, and mastery of one-liners give me joy. Finally, Olive. Oh, Olive and her unrequited love for Ned. I will miss her spunk and apparent aversion to crewnecks.

Dirty Sexy Money: I didn't watch a second of season one, but ended up being sucked into this show this fall since it came on after Private Practice (yes, I watch that mess, don't judge!). It is pure soapy goodness. A guilty pleasure done right. It's what should have been the Dallas or Dynasty of this generation. It did soap better than every single one of the daytime dramas. And believe me, I'm no stranger to daytime. Judging! Stop! What will fill the void in my life for delicious soapy drama?! Well, you know, other than the über-awesome Gossip Girl? And the sometimes-awesome, but really more hit-or-miss Desperate Housewives? Isn't it enough that daytime is currently circling the drain? Why get rid of one of the good bits of soap in my life? Why have you slighted me again, soap gods?!

Serves me right, I suppose. After the loss of my beloved Men in Trees, I knew I shouldn't trust ABC. Fool me once...

Oh, but before I go I should mention that there is one bright spot on ABC. And that is the wonderful American adaptation of the British drama Life on Mars. I was vaugely familiar with Jason O'Mara because of his brief appearance in Band of Brothers (I'm a sucker for nearly anything WWII-related), but I forgot just how smoking hot he was until this show thrust itself into my life by being fortunate enough to take the timeslot after Grey's Anatomy. Finally, something good came from my roommate continuing to watch that drivel! So ABC gets some credit for keeping his beautiful face on my television screen. If you don't watch this show, watch it. Please! After all ABC has done to me, I don't think I could handle losing ~~Jason O'Mara~~ this show from my life too!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to see a professional for my over-attachment to these shows.

Oh, Christmas Music, How I Do Love Thee!

I was watching Live with Regis and Kelly the other morning and Enya performed "White is in the Winter Night" from her new album And Winter Came. Suffice it to say, I immediately downloaded the album and have been pretty much obsessed with it since. I love it. Classic Enya for Christmas. Very ethereal and just beautiful. I highly recommend it.

I also adore Josh Groban's Christmas album Noël and the song "Believe" from The Polar Express soundtrack (and pretty much the rest of that soundtrack as well).

But my absolute favorites are the classics, especially "Hark the Harold Angel Sings," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Sleigh Ride."
